Hobby 5: Dry Ice Bomb

This week's activity won the hobby poll, none other than the legendary dry ice bomb. A dry ice bomb is a simple bomb-like device. While the simplicity and ease of construction, high bursting pressure, and sound make the dry ice bombs attractive for recreational purposes, they can be unpredictable and dangerous.

Birju's mom works at a laboratory, and she suggested that we take some of her dry ice that she brings home every night for her own "doings." So we decided to take advantage of this and create a bomb with the dry ice, because it won our hobby poll (even though Birju and his mom probably rigged the results). We gathered all of the materials and placed the dry ice in the freezer because we wanted to plan this activity out first. When we came back to get the ice, Mike's dad was playing with it, and got his hand frostbitten. He was mad for Birju's actions. Birju is so stupid, you will realize in the movie that Patty filmed. I hope you guys enjoy this weeks activity.

Materials:
-Dry Ice
-Plastic Bottle
-Hammer
-Gloves
-Dry Ice Container
-Warm Water
-Stars and Stripes (if you dare)

Pros:
-Makes obnoxious loud noise

Cons:
-See Birju in video

To make your own bomb, crush up some dry ice and dump it into a half-filled bottle of warm water. Shake and throw far away from fire hydrants. Also, be careful of leaving crushed ice on the sidewalk. Dogs might eat it.

Have fun and be safe.

Hobby 4: Ikaruga

This week we're playing the impossible video game, Ikaruga. The gameplay consists of shooting enemies who come in one of two polarities: either black or white (or possibly red and blue). The player's ship can be either polarity, and can be switched at will.

We have never beaten Ikaruga. Seriously, has anyone? Basically, the game is only 5 stages long, yet we have only recently advanced our skills enough to pass stage 3. Check out our video of the impossible stage 4!

"This is where heroes are made."

Materials:
-SEGA Dreamcast
-Copy of Ikaruga

Pros:
-"It is among the most successful and recognized arcade shooter ports of the 2000s"
-"ScrewAttack voted Ikaruga the 2nd greatest 2D shooter of all time, while IGN voted it the 3rd greatest. ScrewAttack also declared it #9 on Top Ten GameCube Games."

If you can't find either of the materials, you can play a flash remake of the first boss here.

Enjoy everyone! Especially you, Harshal.

Guest Hobby: Cute Animal Photography

*This is a guest article written by Erik Stevenson*

I think most baby animals are cutie pies. Every once in a while, I stumble across a picture that really stands out from the rest. When I find these, I download them and store them in my "Cutie Pie Shrine". This is simply a large collection of images that I look at when I'm feeling down, entertaining guests, or my favorite--right now! I usually get about 1 new pic a week, but I've been doing this for a while and the collection is getting quite large.

The Hobby: Collecting pictures of baby animals that are cutie pies.

How it works: It's very easy!

1) As you browse the internet, pay careful attention to the pictures you see. If one catches your eye, DOWNLOAD IT!

2) Make sure you download it to a memorable location. This will help in case you decide to go back and look at it again someday, or if you plan on creating a shrine, like I did.

3) Rinse and repeat.

It might take a while to get started, but don't let that discourage you. Just take your time and SET REASONABLE GOALS. This is a key idea that helped me get to where I am today.

I have decided to include several of my favorite images to help get you off to a good start with your shrine. I hope you like them as much as I do. I'm sure that you will find that collecting pictures of cute baby animals and creating shrines based around them can be a fun, and rewarding experience.

New Music Widget

Today we added a brand new widget that plays some of our favorite music. We composed a list of four songs, for now, and came across the song: Spaceman by The Killers. So we ended up actually listening to the song and realized it makes no sense! Please help and interpret. To hear the song, click on "4. Spaceman" in the new widget.

Five Free Games? Amazing!

You know what's wrong with games these days? You have to pay. So I'm going to fix this terrible, terrible atrocity by linking you to the five greatest free games out on the net.

Everyone needs a game to play! When you're bored and not feeling like accomplishing anything productive, what else is there but playing a video game or blogging about video games?

>>Sonic Robo Blast 2<<
SRB2 is a timeless classic. This 3D Sonic game packs in everything you could want from the little hedgehog, and then some. The best thing, the game is fully modifiable. Players can make their own levels and characters, and considering this game has held an active community for the past 10 years, there is an endless amount of content to play through! This game makes me proud to own a Sonic sweatband. Very proud.

>>Iji<<
I'm not sure if anyone knows how to actually pronounce this game, but that doesn't make it any less impressive. Iji is an action/adventure game that takes place after earth is destroyed by a mysterious alien force. The story gets off to a slow start, but quickly picks up. A final note, Iji features some of the best bosses I've ever seen! Play this game even if only for the last boss!

>>Tales of Game's Presents Chef Boyardee's Barkley, Shut Up and Jam: Gaiden, Chapter 1 of the Hoopz Barkley SaGa<<
Simply put, this game never stops being impressive. Wikipedia states, "Charles Barkley, in an attempt to impress his son Hoopz Barkley, performs a Chaos Dunk -- and inadvertently kills almost everyone present. As a result, basketball was made illegal and nearly all great players were killed in "The Great B-Ball Purge of 2041" (a.k.a "B-Ballnacht")." And that's just the introduction! This game is a B-Ball themed rpg, featuring a reflex/timing based battle system.

>>Cave Story<<
This is the most popular and highest rated freeware game available. They're even remaking it for the Nintendo Wii! Cave Story is a sidescrolling adventure game similar to Metriod, including several different ways to play through. This game was originally in Japanese, but later fan-translated to English.

>>Immortal Defense<<

Yeah, okay, this isn't free. But the demo is free, so I'm putting Immortal Defense up here. This is one of my all time favorite games, a brilliant mix of game design and storytelling. It's a simple tower defense game in which you try to kill monsters before they reach the end of a line. What really sticks with the player after the game is done is the storyline. You just have to play to see for yourself!

Know any cool free games I missed? Post a link in the comments!

Friendly "Racquet" sports

A good way to stay relatively in shape when you're busy and work out with a friend at the same time is to play racquetball. I'll lay down the rules of this fast paced indoor game and send you off to play with you're friends, collegues, or enemies!

Racquetball is a fun sport that involves up to four players hitting a bouncy rubber ball at any of the 4 walls of a room. It is played with special racquets and balls that are unique to the game.

Racquetball is a very simple game to pick up and play. Play starts when the server stands in the service zone and the receiver stands behind the receiving line. The server then bounces the ball on the ground, and then hits the ball with the racket. The ball then must hit the front wall first and then land behind the short line. After striking the front wall the ball may hit any other wall before touching the ground behind the short line, unless the ball strikes both sidewalls before hitting the ground, as this is considered a fault. The server gets two tries to get the ball in play. Players then alternate hitting the ball, either off one bounce or in the air. When struck the ball must eventually hit the front wall before touching the ground again, this means that the side walls, back wall and ceiling may be hit as along as the ball reaches the front wall before landing. Only the server may score points and a point is awarded if the ball strikes the ground twice. Other ways to score a point include: hitting the ball out of play, intentionally blocking your opponent from reaching the ball or a double fault occurs. After losing a rally the players switch who serves. Games are played to 11 with the winner being ahead by two points. It's a good idea to wear goggles when playing this game as the ball tends to fly about everywhere and can, and will, hit you. So, if you have access to a racquetball court and have the rackets and balls go for it!

Graphics

A friend of mine who I actually met through Starcraft: Brood Wars made this background for me. His beautiful work and dedication towards this art inspired me to make some graphics of my own. Hes been teaching me some of the basics with the multiple programs he uses but it requires a lot of manipulation and time. Hopefully I will be able to display some of my own work in the near future but as of now, I hope you enjoy this piece of work as much as I did.
